Keeping hope alive

Last summer, I took part in a very special event. The 60th anniversary of the founding of Camp Claret du Lac Elgin.

This summer camp was founded by a Claretian Father, a young priest who arrived from Spain with a vision and a mission. Father Carmel Lerma.

As a teenager, I was lucky enough to camp in this heavenly spot for 5 summers. The first year, for 2 weeks, and the following years, I spent the whole summer there. Because my father, a high school art teacher, had been recruited by Father Carmel as coordinator.

Dad was in charge of scheduling activities for all the campers, and the whole family was at Lake Elgin for the summer. My brother Luc and I as campers. Mom and my brother Éric (too young at first) at the cottage.

Last summer, in 2023, in anticipation of this celebration, the team organizing the event asked guests to recount a significant event in their Camp experience.

Here’s what I sent.

Approximately what year was your highlight? Oh, I can’t remember exactly, but I think it was 1972.

I was a camper in the Claire-Nature group at the time, and Dad was the coordinator.

My highlight

We had gone on an excursion to Mont Ham. The weather was overcast and we climbed the mountain in the afternoon. In the evening, we slept under the stars, taking turns to keep the fire “alive” to keep the animals away, but, curiously, in the early morning when the sun woke us, the fire was out… BUT what I saw changed my perception of things forever.

It was very early and the sun was shining brightly in the sky over the mountain. Straightening up a little, this is what I saw. The summit of Mount Ham was “cut off” from the rest of the world – a “carpet” of clouds stretched as far as the eye could see. We were alone in the world under the bright sun! It was breathtakingly beautiful. I remember marvelling at what I was seeing, while my fellow campers seemed to find it less beautiful than I did!

After closing the bivouac, we took the trail back down the mountain. The further down we went, the more we were in the clouds, which eventually turned to rain once we reached the bottom.

Before getting back into the Camp minibus, I remember looking up at the sky where the summit of Mount Ham was nowhere to be seen (let alone the sun) and thinking that I should never forget this moment… because even if I can’t SEE it, the sun is shining somewhere.

That image is still with me. I tell you about it here and I SEE it in my mind!

Despite the difficult times we face in life, the sun shines somewhere… So keep hoping Linda!

An outstanding experience

These images have been with me all my life since that moment. The sun above the clouds.

And I’m convinced that what I experienced on the top of that mountain in 1972 was what we call a moment of grace. The kind of experience that changes our perspective on things forever.

If you’ve ever been on a plane on a rainy day, you know what it’s like to fly above the cloud line.

This vision is as real as the rain that fell on the runway when you took off!

Rain on the ground. Sun higher!

Keep hope (say your name here). The sun shines somewhere and if I rise above my clouds, it’s there.

We laugh to ward off fear… and viruses!

Note: you’ll find all the links behind the orange words!

The whole world is shaking right now, and it’s time to LAUGH TO STAY CENTERED! We laugh to chase away the fear and the virus!

Since March 12, I’ve been doing on my personal Facebook page every day to encourage us to do things that keep our energy higher. That help us look up instead of down. Do things and make CHOICES! And of course, we laugh together!

Once completed each day, I place these videos on the the Laughter Yoga School YouTube channel (because, of course, not everyone is on FB!) where you can watch them and get inspired.

To prevent the spread of the virus, all places where laughter yoga sessions were held were closed. However, opportunities to laugh together online flourished here and there!

Many fellow Laughter Yoga facilitators, teachers and masters around the world have offered to host shorter Laughter Yoga sessions or, more simply, intentional laughter sessions on the internet. (ZOOM will have seen its shares bounce back over the past week, as many groups meet virtually to exchange ideas and have a laugh. Our direct contacts may be limited, but our virtual communications are proliferating – much to our delight! Thanks for our sanity 😉

Reinforcements

Here are some links where you can see/hear yourself laughing – because laughing releases tension, lets go of fear and anxiety, and keeps you as calm and collected as possible. We take the means! And we CHOOSE JOY! – because the other alternatives aren’t valid right now! HAHAHA!

10 minutes

First, the link to the 10-minute mini-sessions on ZOOM.

How it works: You choose your time and click on the presenter’s photo. You’ll be directed to the meeting space on ZOOM. We laugh together for about 9 minutes and breathe calmly at the end. No talking. Just laughter.

It can be a little unsettling the first time, but give yourself the gift of doing it cheerfully and see how much better you feel afterwards. Do it as often as you like! And there are laughers from all over the world who’ll be with you.

Do you want to be with me?

I’m there Monday, Wednesday Wednesday and Thursday. If you’re in Europe, the times shown on the chart are yours. If you’re in North America, you’ll need to look at the world clock to make the calculation. France switches to daylight saving time on March 28, at which point there will be a 6-hour time difference between Quebec and France (6 hours LESS here)!

30 minutes

And also the link to the laughter yoga session I offer on Wednesday evenings at 7pm 30 minutes of laughter yoga, breathing and relaxation exercises. Before going to bed with a smile on your face.

So there’s no excuse not to take the smiling steps to boost your immune system and chase away the blues and stress!

Humans are not made to be alone.

And in these times of upheaval, it’s reassuring to know that we can “see” each other, despite our enforced isolation!

Come and join us! It’ll do me as much good as it’ll do you! (Guess why I’m doing it…)

Take care of yourself. Wash your hands for 20 seconds while laughing. Think of others! Love yourself!

When I’m blue… Keep hope alive

Quand j’ai les bleus bébé, quand j’ai les bleus… Remember Pauline Julien’s song about crunching pills to cheer herself up and see things differently? Yeah… a lot of people have no choice but to turn to traditional medicine for a little hope.

I chose another option.

It’s not that traditional medicine is bad, but I’m lucky enough to have several tools in my trunk for those days when the sun is behind the clouds.

Because, you know, that’s exactly what’s happening. Clouds momentarily block out the bright sunlight. I know, having seen it as a teenager at summer camp.

We had climbed a mountain at sunset and had to spend the night on the summit sleeping under the stars. All night long, people took it in turns to stay awake to make sure the campfire stayed lit to keep “unwanted” animals away and to allow us to cook a hot breakfast. Surprise, surprise! Everyone was asleep and the fire had gone out.

It was the warm rays of the sun that roused us from our early slumber. Tempted to grumble at this early awakening, I was preparing to pull my sleeping bag up over my face when I was taken aback by the beauty of what I was seeing. We had the bright sun in our eyes, yes, but just a few meters below us was a line of thick, white, flaky clouds. It was as if we were on top of the world! Clouds as far as the eye could see, the top of the mountain, the sun and us! It was magical! Nothing else existed! The horizon was white and distant with https://findfucker.com/.

As we had to get back down to a meeting point by midday, we all savored the moment and recorded these images before starting our descent.

The further we descended, the more we were in the liquefying clouds! A heavy rain fell at the bottom of the mountain. My companions and I couldn’t help but marvel at it, for we KNOW from having seen it that above the clouds, the sun shines brightly! Even if we couldn’t see it! Even if it was pouring buckets of water down on us, above it all, the weather was magnificent…

That trip taught me a great lesson about life. I wasn’t even 15 and I remember it like it was yesterday. I look back on it with the same sense of wonder.

Whenever I feel like I’m moving forward under a deluge of worries, cares, pitfalls and challenges, when my life gets “heavy” and events get me down, I KNOW that if I put myself somewhere else, like that day that gave me faith that the sun is still shining up there, I’ll be able to hold on to hope and keep moving forward (or wait patiently for a while). I KNOW that this is just a passing thing and that things will eventually get better. It’s all a question of perspective. Where I am right now is crisis and trouble! But if I climb the mountain, get past the rain clouds, I’ll see the sun again!

Today was a day a bit like that. The weather outside is heavy and gray. My inner weather is a bit melancholy and I’m inclined to want to hug myself, rock myself and cry softly… Nothing serious. Just like that for all sorts of reasons… that will pass. It’s not that I deny that I have the blues. Nor that I’m looking to get out of them faster and check More at oldigor.com. I look at what is, I breathe, I give thanks for being able to be aware of it and I simply smile. The sun continues to shine above the passing cloud. And rain is great! It’s necessary for life!

Have you ever experienced something similar? Does it give you hope too? Tell me… I’m very interested.
