April 14 – International MOMENT TO LAUGH Day!

Tuesday April 14 is International MOMENT TO LAUGH Day – a day to remind us all of the importance of laughing out loud.

And I’m giving you a REAL challenge.

💛 Quick challenge: MOMENT OF LAUGHTER

Today (or tomorrow 😉 ), take…

⏰ 2 minutes

Yes, just 2 minutes to LAUGH OUT LOUD.

Taking a moment to deliberately laugh out loud may seem a little ridiculous.

But we need it.

📊 More than a third of the 1,000 employees surveyed by Monster.com
say their workplace has become more serious in the past year.

We see this in our daily lives. At work or at home.

And guess what?

This is not good news. (You can feel it!)

😔 Less laughter = more stress
😔 Less levity = more burnout

On the contrary…

😄 An environment where we laugh
💛 is often a space where we feel good
🤝 safe
🌿 and connected to others

And it’s not “just in your head”.

The body, too, is on board.

✨ Simply anticipating laughter reduces cortisol (stress hormone) by 39% and epinephrine by 70%.

Yes… just think about it.

And that’s not all 😄

Laughter:

💓 lowers blood pressure
💪 releases muscle tension
🧠 increases oxygen to the brain (highly recommended by doctors!)
🌿 relaxes the body faster than Valium or vodka (two things you definitely shouldn’t bring to the office!)
🔥 and even burns a few calories (yes yes! I have a friend who goes to his local gym and just laughs at people working out).

A moment of laughter can help us stay humble and human.

And between us…

👉 It’s sugar-free
👉 cholesterol-free
👉 gluten-free
👉 alcohol-free
👉 and calorie-free 😉

But beyond all these benefits…

Laughter brings us back to something simple and precious:

💛 our humanity
💛 our lightness
💛 our ability not to take everything too seriously

(How about giving ourselves permission… a little more often?)

🌀 Mission for the day: A time to laugh

On the occasion of the International Day of the Laughing Moment,
I suggest something simple… and powerful:

👉 Plan a real laugh.

Yes, plan it.
Like an important appointment.

⏰ Choose a moment in your day
(even 2 to 5 minutes is enough)

Then…

😄 start laughing – on purpose
😂 let the laughter grow
🤣 let your body get on board

RIS FORT! A real laugh riot. For a little while.

🎯 F or that little something extra that makes the world more beautiful :

👉 Do it with someone
👉 Or send a laugh as a voicemail
👉 Or look in the mirror and laugh (yes yes 😄)

💡 Remember:

You don’t have to wait until you want to laugh.
You can choose to laugh.

And this simple choice
can completely transform your state.

With affection (and a smile!)

Linda

p.s. I promise to laugh in public today! Here’s the proof!

Laughing at yourself, an underestimated skill

Late Monday, I was walking out of a store – a little preoccupied by the fact that I had printed the wrong document I needed for the Laughter Yoga Facilitator Training I’ll be offering this weekend. Ishhhh… Not happy with myself and my distraction!

I leave the store and head for my car.

I press the handle.

It doesn’t open.

I’ll try again.

Still nothing.

I’m a little annoyed at the automatic lock, which doesn’t work.

That’s when I realize…
it’s not my car.

Same color.
Same model.
Same parking… or almost.

Celebrity gif. Jennifer Lawrence grimaces in front of a microphone during a panel as if to say,
OUPS!

Mine is identical, yes –
but, on closer inspection, much less clean! 😅

And then, on the parking lot, I laughed.

Not a little embarrassed smile.
A real laugh. Loud and clear!

Because deep down… it was harmless.
Human.
And frankly a bit comical.

Laughing at yourself is an underestimated skill.

We believe that credibility comes from constant seriousness.
We think we always have to look confident, in control, impeccable.

But the ability to see yourself stumble… and laugh about it?
That’s a form of inner strength.

To laugh at ourselves is not to diminish ourselves.
It’s to give ourselves the right to be imperfect.
It’s to release the pressure of always having to “do well”.
It’s to humanize our own demands.

And above all… it relaxes the nervous system.

Laughing in that parking lot immediately sent my body into safety mode.
No shame.
No self-criticism.
Just a light moment in an ordinary day.

And that changes everything.

I love it!

So I invite you to do this with me.

Watch yourself.

The next little mistake, the next little oversight, the next awkward moment…

Instead of judging you,
try smiling.
Maybe even laughing.

Notice how it affects your body.
Your breathing.
Your mood.

You can’t avoid every mistake.

But you can choose the energy with which you cross them.

And sometimes it all starts with a door that won’t open.

💛

With all my affection… and a big laugh!

Linda

Gain altitude

An unforgettable memory

When I was a teenager, my parents allowed me to spend some exceptional summers at a summer camp in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. Camp Claret became my “permanent residence” for 5 summers.

Dad, who was a teacher during the school year, was available for the summer months and was hired as activities coordinator. At that time, there were only 3 girls’ tents, while there were 10 for the boys.

I was one of the “big girls” and we had “big girl” activities. We’d go on expeditions lasting several days. Provisions divided between us. The backpacks we used then were nowhere near as good as those sold today! Ours were made of heavy, leaky army canvas! Clothes and sleeping bags got wet even in dry weather! We had to balance the weight in the bag, otherwise we’d quickly become uncomfortable.

One of my fondest memories of those summers is of a trip we took up Mont Ham. I was 14. This memory left an indelible mark on my life, transforming my perception of the world and leaving a deep imprint on my heart. The kind of memory that stays with you forever.

In those days, the path up to the summit was far from being as well-marked as it is today. We followed a sometimes very steep route, walking on rock with no footholds to secure our ascent. But once we reached the summit, we were rewarded by the majestic landscape before our eyes. This mountain being one of the highest in the region, on a clear day we could see far into the distance.

This time was no exception. By the time we reached the summit in the late afternoon, the weather was warm and sunny, and we were treated to a magnificent sunset.

The excursion was to last until the next day, so we set up our bivouac on the mountain, sleeping under the stars. Few trees on the summit – none near us – and few dead branches to make a fire. No problem at all! In our youthful enthusiasm, we managed to gather enough wood to last a siege of several hours.

Imagine this.

A group of 10-12 teenage girls accompanied by two leaders, around a campfire that had to stay lit all night to provide light, warmth and keep the animals away. We sang, laughed and chatted away. Just happiness!

We had to do “guard duty” to keep the flame burning, but you can imagine that someone fell asleep and the fire went out before morning!

It was the sun that woke us up that morning. A bright, intense sun.

In my memory, I woke up before my companions. When I opened my eyes, I first saw that the fire was really dead, but what filled me with joy and gratitude was the landscape before my eyes: big white “flaky” clouds as far as the eye could see.

It was as if we were on top of the world! Just us in the hot sun. And those thick, fluffy clouds that were like a carpet we could have walked on!

I can’t remember if the other girls were as amazed as I was. The kind of wonder that leaves you speechless. To this day, I still have a feeling of fulfillment when I think back on that moment.

As we made our way down to the base of the mountain, the sun became increasingly overcast, until halfway down, when it began to rain. Gone was the warming sun. It was raining hard at the bottom of the mountain.

The highlight of my life

It’s this memory that keeps me hopeful in the less easy times I sometimes go through.

Why?

Because I KNOW that beyond the clouds, the sun is shining brightly. Even if I can’t see it now, it’s there a little higher up. That’s all there is to it! No matter where or when, a ray of sunshine will eventually show up in my life to brighten and warm me up.

Hence the importance of gaining altitude!

When our noses are too “glued” to a situation, a problem or a difficulty, we can’t see the whole picture. We can lose sight of the good, the beautiful, the gentle, because we’re somehow obsessed with the hard, the sad, the worrying.

Everything else is there!

So how do you go about it?

My favorite way to gain altitude is, of course, to laugh. Laughing intentionally allows me to breathe and also to laugh at what’s bothering me. Now, you might say that I’m probably laughing yellow, but you wouldn’t be entirely wrong! I really force myself at times. But after a few seconds, I hear myself thinking that it’s ridiculous to laugh like that and… the magic happens! I’m laughing for real! Even for a few seconds, it works. I continue on my way with a slightly lighter heart. Altitude.

We can also practice cardiac coherence. By focusing our attention on our breathing for 5 minutes, we “pause” our mind. Here’s a short tutorial. Altitude.

During my enforced confinement, I had started doing Zen art. Drawing, concentrating on small patterns, repetition and arrangement, gave me great satisfaction and pleasure. After an hour of “doodling”, I felt as if I’d been taking care of myself for a long time. Altitude.

Get out into nature for a walk, a swim, cook a new recipe, do-it-yourself, paint… Altitude.

At laughter yogamany of the exercises focus on things that are less funny (or not funny at all!). The VISA account, no money, the argument… Has it occurred to you that if you can laugh about it all, your brain might realize that it’s not as dramatic as you thought? That’s the lesson I’ve learned.

Get moving! Gain altitude!

And keep smiling

Laughter, joy and health

A great celebration!

I can’t wait for this great celebration!

As you probably know, May 7 is World Laughter Day.

But what makes me so happy this year is that this date will officially mark the 20th anniversary of my professional laughter yoga practice.

And for the occasion, I invite you to a great party!

We’re going to laugh, move, dance and celebrate life with joy and good humour.

The retrospective

I’ve found that when I look back over the last 20 years, there are certain moments that drain my energy, while others put it into orbit around the sun. I’m sure that if I asked you to do this exercise, you’d have some good and not-so-good memories too. Harder times. Celebrations.

You can imagine that in 20 years, even though I teach intentional laughter, this journey hasn’t always been like the “yellow brick road” in the film The Wizard of Oz, where I would sing and gambol along! hahaha! Hell no!

I had moments of doubt – not that I doubted the power of the method – but doubting myself. Am I okay? Good enough? Comfortable? Supportive and present? Documented? Just… enough.

If in 2023 I’m still hearing people say they’ve never heard of laughter yoga, imagine that in 2003! It makes me laugh to think back on the bewildered looks and wry smiles. “Yoga of what?” I couldn’t judge, because I myself had had this reaction when I first read the words Laughter Yoga: What have they invented now?

Sometimes the perception is that it’s not serious. And God knows it is.

Researchers have shown us enough about the physical and mental health benefits of laughter. Even if it’s difficult to prove beyond any scientific doubt that laughter is good for your health, our state of mind speaks louder than our doubts! After laughing, WE FEEL GOOD – period!

When you consider that cardiologists are now PRESCRIBING minutes of laughter to their patients, you’ll stop thinking it’s far-fetched! In fact, Dr. Michael Miller ‘s book Heal Your Heart contains a whole chapter devoted to laughter and its benefits for heart health.

Although I know all this, I admit that some nights when I’m more tired, I question things and wonder if it’s worth it… Then I remember.

Do you remember…

A few years ago, François Morency published a book in which he recounted his “worst” experiences as a comedian. The worst venues, living and touring conditions, flopping acts… I was almost tempted to write the same kind of behind-the-scenes book about life as a speaker and trainer.

Not to complain, but rather to help me remember what drives me and keeps me going.

And what keeps me going is the spark that lights up in people’s eyes when they realize they can laugh at will. Without thinking. Without judging. Just… laugh!

I finally gave up on this book project because you kept me so busy! The sparks have been flying brighter and brighter. And the ideas and wonderful projects multiplied.

Thank goodness!

I can count on you to celebrate with me on May 7? Whether you’re in the room with me or laughing from home via the School’s YouTube channel, where I’ll be broadcasting live, I’m counting on you to make this a day to remember!

If you’d like to be there on May 7, from 1 to 2 p.m. at Centre St-Pierre (1212 rue Panet, Montréal), I’ve provided the link to register. It’s free, and the registration is to give me an idea of how many people I’ll need for the birthday cake! If you decide to come and you’re not registered, it’s no problem at all! COME! Bring your friends, your kids, your neighbors. It’s a PARTY! A REAL PARTY!

Big smiling kisses

Laughter, joy and health

Nuggets of inspiration every minute!!! Here’s what’s in store!

Because laughing will help us…

Why take action to offer online laughter breaks? Because laughing will help us all!

Following in the footsteps of my colleague Corinne Cosseron from theÉcole internationale de rire in France, I’ve put out a call to all instructors trained at the École du yoga du rire so that we can offer mini flash sessions of intentional laughter.

It starts on Monday, March 30, 2020.

All you have to do is consult the the proposed schedule at www.yogadurire.com/urgencerire and choose the times when you’d like to laugh with us. You’ll see a series of “screen” icons at the bottom of the page and, just by clicking on one or the other at the time displayed, you’ll be immediately directed to the “meeting room”. It’s that simple. All you have to do is download ZOOM onto your device. It’s safe and convenient.

We’ll use the following format:

  • People arrive in line and warm up (some presenters will choose physical movements, others sounds).
  • Intentional laughter
  • Breathing and smiling
  • Relaxation
  • Share and farewell

We’ll be online at ZOOM for a few weeks, at various times during the day. During the day and in the evening too. Just until things settle down and we can physically laugh together again!

Until then, it’s the best thing we can do to make ourselves feel better and not give in to panic, fear and discouragement. Let’s keep our hopes up and our spirits high!

Many thanks to Mance, Noémie, Claude, Johanne, Céline, Jacques, Martine, Fanny and Karine for agreeing to be with us! You guys are great!

Come on. At GO, do we let ourselves laugh out loud? Because that’s what makes us feel good!

GO!

One more day in 2020!

Hahaha! I just realized that 2020 is a leap year and we have an extra day on the calendar!

It’s so perfect!

I have two brothers. One of them is lucky (or unlucky) enough to have been born on February 29. So he celebrates his real birthday every four years. As if he didn’t age the other three years! Ha!

Why am I telling you this? Because I’m feeling feverish and bubbly at the thought of an extra day, and because my brother will be celebrating his birthday this year, which makes it special! Not necessarily because 2020 is full of promises, projects and travel! No.

I can’t wait to see what’s possible this year alone. Of all the MORE that will be. Of all the celebrations that will make people smile, sing and dance. Of all the activities we never do in “normal” times, but will do in 2020 because we have an extra day!

….

We often wait for special occasions to do something, wear something we like, drink a certain wine…

So let’s try something new this leap year.

Take out your beautiful dishes every day. Place a candle on the table every evening. Drink from your Crystal glass, your fine china cup. Use your finest cutlery, your most beautiful tablecloth. Wear your beautiful “weekday” dress, your colorful tie. Make yourself beautiful! Just for fun! Don’t wait until February 29 to celebrate!

I can tell you right now that I intend to do everything I’m suggesting here!

I intend to do all that. A little bit every day. To stop waiting for “something special to happen”. Because every day is special! Even more so this year!

Wishing you a very happy, very happy, very especially ordinary New Year! May 2020 make us all AWARE of the beauty of each day – even if the coating sometimes smells bad!

Health, laughter and joy

Your Haha Sister, Linda

Because you’ve been asking me that for a long time!

That’s it! I say yes (finally!), because you’ve been asking me for a long time!

It’s the holiday season… so it’s the perfect time for gift-giving!

People have been writing to me for a long time to find out when I’ll be offering workshops for the general public in Montreal, and well, it’s on the calendar for 2019!

I’m offering four (4) Laughter Yoga programs in Montreal this winter!

Not one, not two, but four Sunday afternoons spent laughing together! Filling up with good humor for the week ahead. And because I feel like it, as a bonus I’ll be offering a little introduction to the JOYFIT method at each session (excellent for boosting our immune system, since we’re activating the movement of lymph in our bodies!) Depending on the group, I’ll also be adding “HAHA Sisterhood” capsules and bubbles! That’s what I’m talking about, folks!

I had the joy of completing my BrainGym 101 training with Manon Lefebvre of “L’équilibre en mouvement”. Today, she’s offering me the use of her beautiful premises to share these fun and beneficial moments with you this winter.

Why Sunday?

Because it’s the perfect time to build momentum for the week. Many people tell me they’re gloomy and depressed on Sundays – the weekend’s over and we’re getting ready to go back to work on Monday morning… But by laughing our hearts out on Sundays, we charge our cells with smiling, positive energy! The perfect combination for avoiding the blues!

You can take just one session, or all four (in fact, this is the option I suggest if you want to install healthy, happy laughter habits). The effect is guaranteed: SMILE AND RELAX!

You must register in advance, however, and can do so online in the École boutique or by calling 819-210-5057 or Manon at 514-794-1497.

I don’t know about you, but I’d jump at the chance to spend 6 hours together laughing, laughing, laughing and relaxing as the winter months set in!

See you in Outremont in January?

If I’m ready to make the drive to you, I hope you’ll feel like getting out of the house to join me! hahaha!

Laughter, joy and health

Why is it so destabilizing?

Laughing at nothing… Why is it so destabilizing for us serious, stressed-out adults?

I was listening to a report on Radio-Canada’s Medium Large program this morning, and the host, Catherine Perrin, was talking to a columnist about laughter. In fact, about the false beliefs associated with laughter.

Naturally, my curiosity was piqued!

For example, they said the following:

  1. A good laugh is the equivalent of a session at the gym. Laughing burns a few calories, but not many. Not enough to make it worthwhile.
  2. Just because we laugh doesn’t mean it’s funny. Now we know!
  3. The monkeys laugh too. Of course you can! Many species can laugh. We just don’t know how to decode!
  4. It’s laugh-out-loud funny. That. I’d say we can die from not laughing enough!
  5. “Pre-recorded laughter” is effective. Our brains are equipped with laughter detectors—just like yawn detectors—so we feel the urge to laugh when we hear laughter… even if it’s “pre-recorded.”

However, laughter is an important social component and improves our communication.

A few years ago, I had asked that same host to mention the World Laughter Day celebrations taking place that year in Montreal’s Old Port. Her team seemed a little perplexed by the concept of laughter yoga.

And the more I listened to them this morning, the more I wondered how it is that the concept of intentional laughter is so destabilizing for adults?

If the columnist had said that laughter makes you lose weight, I can only imagine the number of people who would have rushed to sign up for classes!

But while laughing doesn’t make you lose weight (at least not enough to be worth mentioning), laughing is tremendously good for your health! On every level! Physically, mentally, socially, emotionally and spiritually (yes, I dare say it!).

Laughter is a PHYSICAL process. Humor is a MENTAL process. In laughter yoga, we know this very well! We practice intentional laughter to, in a way, develop our sense of humor. The more we laugh—even intentionally—the more we find things funny. It’s like a workout!

Curiously, many adults have difficulty with this concept – intentional laughter means laughing “at nothing” – and yet they all understand the benefits of the stationary bike or the treadmill… and yet we’re going nowhere! But we keep going! HAHAHA!

Conclusion? What if we ALLOW ourselves to try? What could be worse than finding ourselves laughing out loud and saying, “This is crazy, but it works!

And IT FEELS GOOD!

Laughter, joy and health

Linda

P.S. Give it a try and let me know what you think! I’ve included a short audio clip to help you out.

Touching moments with seniors

Last Friday, I had the privilege of sharing some very touching moments with a group of seniors in Montreal. Very touching indeed.

I took part in a shoot for Fernand Dansereau’s next film – Le Vieil âge et l’Espérance.

I met Fernand in 2011, I think—the year he was shooting his film *Le Vieil âge et le rire*, in which laughter yoga played a small part. This man is the kind of person who honors us with his friendship. Filmmaker, director, screenwriter—we owe him so many films and TV series! Many of the films Fernand Dansereau was involved in as a producer have won a whole string of national and international awards. In fact, *Le Vieil âge et le rire* won the Audience Favorite Award at the Rendez-vous du cinéma québécois! His body of work is so rich and extensive that I invite you to check out the list on Wikipedia!

Anyway, last Friday I was with a lovely group of 10 seniors, all aged between 80 and… 98. The cameras, pole and microphone intimidated us all at the start of the laughter yoga workshop. But as we progressed through the exercise, the more I saw the eyes sparkle with pleasure and the less we were bothered by the technique. Something wonderful happened between us: a complicity of laughter, joy and good humor.

Positive attitude

Despite the weight of years, physical restrictions and cognitive loss, many of the participants I asked to let go of their worries responded: I have nothing to let go of! I’m all right! I’m not hurt. I’m just fine.

This positive, serene attitude gave me a lot to think about on my way back to Ottawa.

If senior citizens in long-term accommodation, old and even very old, in wheelchairs and walking frames, tell me that everything is fine, what do I have to complain about sometimes? I go where I want, I eat what I want, I see who I want… Yes, I have occasional physical aches and pains. Yes, I have annoyances. But me too, I’m Fine and All’s Well, so it’s a choice? Well… Maybe so after all! As Sonia DiMaulo taught me in the spring, by keeping my words positive, I attract more positivity to myself!

These seniors living with Alzheimer’s disease, with serious physical challenges… and no longer “young”, I saw them happy and serene. After experimenting with a few laughter yoga exercises adapted to their condition, I saw them smiling, cheeks rosy, eyes bright.

I practice what I teach?

I was a bit nervous when I arrived… It’s never a foregone conclusion when I’m working with groups. Will they like what I suggest? Will they be able to overcome their initial embarrassment and let themselves laugh… at nothing? How will they react? And last Friday, I was feeling a little extra stress because the technical crew was going to be watching my every move and filming for Fernand’s movie. I often say this when I’m training facilitators or teachers: the focus shouldn’t be on us, but rather on the people who are with us when we’re leading a workshop. That’s why I can laugh at myself—because it probably took me a good five minutes to stop worrying about whether my hair looked okay on camera, whether I’d be able to get these people to participate, or whether I’d be “good enough”! Hahahaha! — Yes, yes! I’m laughing at myself!!

My lessons.

In the end, what I took away from this exercise was the following:

  • Do your best and forget the rest… it doesn’t belong to you – Learn to let go.
  • When you DECIDE to take things positively, they become positive.
  • Age is a funny concept… it’s possible to be 98 and look 80!
  • After a while, if we’re busy, we stop seeing the disturbing elements – Focus on what matters.
  • You can do lots of important or fun things at any age – Thank you Fernand for showing me so beautifully.
  • Even if we sometimes forget, our childlike heart is never far away – the mischievous eyes bore witness to this.
  • The good old songs of yesteryear stay with us – I’ve seen them humming with Doris Day
  • And as my grandmother Éva’s favourite song says, the heart never gets old! – Despite the wrinkles!

Fernand Dansereau, I’m honoured by your presence in my life! Thank you for allowing me to experience such beautiful and extraordinary things!
